TRC Advent Evensong
December 3, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Join our brothers and sisters at Trinity Reformed Church for an Evensong service.
Evensong has its roots in a phenomenon known as the “holy office” or the “liturgy of hours.” These are a series of daily prayers that are said at particular hours of the day. The practice had its roots in the Jewish tradition of praying specific prayers at set times in the day. The apostles followed these traditions and prayed at midnight, morning, noon, and afternoon. Early Christians also borrowed this practice, rooting the practice in the psalmists’ words: “I will meditate on you in the morning;” “I rose at midnight to give you praise;” “Evening and morning, and at noon I will speak and declare: and he shall hear my voice;” “Seven times a day I have given praise to you.”
Much of a choral evensong is sung by the choir, and this is the peculiar appeal of the service. In an economy where worship is full of duties to be performed by the congregation, choral evensong provides ample opportunity for the congregation to sit, absorb, be taught, be moved and be nourished, while still performing a central liturgical function.
