+ Confession of Faith: Apostles Creed
Minister: Christian, what do you believe?
Congregation: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord.  He was conceived by the Holy Ghost, and born of the virgin, Mary.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.  He descended into Hades.  On the third day He rose again from the dead, ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Sermon
Exodus 4:1-18 (Tim Edwards)

Sermon

As we come to Exodus ch.4 we are entering in the middle of a conversation that began in Ch.3 God has taken the initiative, as he always does, and revealed himself to Moses at the Burning Bush and stated very explicitly:
1. Who He is and what He is about to do (3:6-9)
2. Moses is His chosen instrument to bring Israel out of Egypt (3:10)
This begins a conversation between Moses and God that runs all the way through to ch.4:17, with 4:1 being central to understanding Moses’ stubbornness:
Then Moses answered and said, “But suppose they will not believe me or listen to my voice; suppose they say, ‘The Lord has not appeared to you.’” (NKJV)
And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The Lord hath not appeared unto thee. (KJV)

Two very different translations which generate different ways to understand what Moses is saying. KJV makes most sense and is the most shocking. Compare with what God says in 3:16-18:
Go and gather the elders of Israel together, and say to them, ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me, saying… 18 Then they will heed your voice;

How should we understand Moses direct contradiction of God?
Ex. 3:11: Moses questions God’s choice of him, “Who am I…” as well as God’s decision to redeem Israel from Egypt.
Exodus 4:31…6:9: Moses was wrong… Moses was right

How should we understand God’s response to Moses?
Exodus 3:12 Israel is not fit for redemption – but that is the point!
Exodus 4:2-9 signs for Israel and Moses

“I am not eloquent!” (Ex.4:10)
These are striking words from Moses, of whom we are told:
And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds. (Acts 7:22)

“O my Lord, please send by the hand of whomever else You may send”
Moses final attempt to get out of his calling – send someone else!

The Anger of God
This is the first record of God becoming angry in the Torah.
