Miscellaneous Notes and Issues

1.       Observation: our present vows are kinda weak. Could be clearer on confessional subscription.

3.      Advantage of proposed vows is that it supplies one clear place in our documents as to what the difference is between ruling elders, teaching elders, and ministers.

4.      Discussion point: Should these vows (or a modified version) go into Constitution, Liturgy, or Protocols?

5.      Proposed vow A2, on confessional subscription: Confessional subscription has been a troubling issue in American Presbyterianism since the 1729 Adopting Act of the Synod of Philadelphia, and continues to be so down to the present day. The language proposed here is adapted from a proposal presented to the 149th and 150th General Synods (1971 and 1972) of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod (RPCES). This is the best “subscription vow” I have found.

6.      Vow A 3 is the PCA’s contribution to the problem of confessional subscription.

7.      Vow A 4 is Episcopalian, with slight changes.

8.      Vow A 6 combines Presbyterian and Episcopalian vows.

9.      Teaching elder vows 1 through 3 are Episcopalian. Vow 4 is taken from that for Presbyterian minister.

10.  Vows for minister are Episcopalian.

11.  All the sheets appended are provided for reference and information; nothing more.

BROTHER, forasmuch as the Holy Scripture and the ancient Canons command, that we should not be hasty in laying on hands, and admitting any person to Government in the Church of Christ, which he hath purchased with no less price than the effusion of his own blood; before we admit you to this Administration, we will examine you in certain Articles, to the end that the Congregation present may have a trial, and bear witness, how you are minded to behave yourself in the Church of God.

Answer. I am so persuaded, and determined, by God's grace.
